How it
Works

First it was homes, then rides. We want to bring sharing to wireless networks.

Network sharing

Our vision for the future of wireless internet access revolves around a concept called network sharing. The idea is for people to share their internet connection with others and create their own collaborative wireless network.

This would remove the need for the cell phone towers controlled by the big Telecoms. The more Canadians that use a small cell device in their home or office, the bigger the wireless network becomes. Network sharing can break the Telecom monopoly and result in lower wireless rates and a more open wireless industry.

How it works

Small cell technology is at the heart of network sharing. Simply put, a small cell is a little device that connects directly into your internet modem. The small cell device emits a live wireless zone with a range of about a half-kilometre. Anyone within range can connect to your wifi and gain secure wireless service.

If enough people install small cells, we would create a vast peer-to-peer wireless network, owned and shared amongst the people. As you move from one zone into another, you’d enjoy a reliable, uninterrupted voice and data mobile connection.

In a nutshell:

Gather interest and support for FreeTheNorth. Help us create visible desire for change and competition in the wireless landscape.

Members would purchase and install a small cell and share their internet connection with other members.

Build and grow a collaborative wireless network across Canada using network sharing.

The plan ahead

Our aim at the Free the North is to build a platform that will allow Canadians to easily install their own small cell device at home or in the office. But before we can get started, we’ll need to garner support and overcome some major hurdles. We need your help in getting the word out and showing that people are interested in network sharing.

No commitment needed, just an indication that sometime in the future, you might be willing to be part of this plan. Help us change the wireless industry in Canada for the better!
